If the scale starts with the note which has the lowest pitch and goes up to the note with the highest pitch, the scale is called ascending. In music, a scale is a set of notes in order of their pitch (that is, their frequency). The most common major scales use half steps between the third and fourth note and between the seventh and eighth notes. There is half a step (or a semitone) between two keys next to each other. The eighth note is an octave higher than the first one.
